"ART DECO" Porch Swing

Black Walnut & Cherry Hardwoods

"The process of creating as well as the pleasure my work brings others is especially satisfying." T. McGrady

I have a Modern and a French Country Porch Swing. I felt the urge to design something new and very different. Art Deco kept entering my mind. So I Goggled "art deco furniture" to search for inspiration. I look for shapes that are soft and round as opposed to sharp and angular. Anyway, I spent a week looking at the computer screen until my eyes and mind were fried. I could not find any inspiration. I decided to put it aside until another time and moved on.

About a month later a woodworking magazine arrived with plans for an Art Deco desk clock. It leaped off the page and immediately I knew this was my Swing.

First, I visualize what it is going to look like. Once I have a clear picture in my mind I made a scaled drawing and begin work.

Work starts by selecting the wood. I'm known for going through every board the lumber company has just to find  the right wood for my new Swing. The first time I build a new design it is always challenging. I start making patterns from the scaled drawling. Then it's on to building the Swing.

If I create from the heart nearly everything works;
If from the head, almost nothing. Marc Chagall (1887-1985)

The back of the Swing consists of three parts. The center is Black Walnut and the wings are Cherry.

The back is attached to the frame with screws and glue and supported by two braces on the rear side of the Swing’s back.

Evolution of the Arms

I choose beautiful grain patterns for the arms. First, the two arms rough cut to size and the template. Next you see the arms shaped, drilled and ready for assembly. Pencil markings indicate exact placement of the screw holes. And finally, the finished arm.

Seat has a real nice contour to provide optimum comfort.

Attaching name plate to Porch Swing.

Porch Swing is complete and ready for seven coats of Epifanes Marine Varnish.
